Feature Request: Optional Transcript Anonymization for Privacy and Secure Sharing

First of all, thank you for building and maintaining Transcriptonic. It has become a very useful tool for capturing and organizing Google Meet discussions.

Motivation

Many users need to share meeting transcripts with people outside the original meeting, store them in shared repositories, submit them for compliance reviews, or use them as internal documentation and training material.

In these scenarios, participant names may contain personally identifiable information (PII) that should not always be exposed. Having built-in anonymization options would make transcripts easier and safer to share while preserving the conversation's structure and readability.

Proposed Solution

Add an optional anonymization setting that can be enabled before exporting or saving a transcript.

The feature could offer multiple anonymization modes depending on the user's needs.

Option 1: Replace Names with Initials

Convert participant names into their initials while preserving speaker attribution.

Example

Original:

Arthur Frost: Let's start the meeting.
Maria Johnson: Sounds good.

Anonymized:

A.F.: Let's start the meeting.
M.J.: Sounds good.

Option 2: Replace Names with Generic Identifiers

Replace participant names with standardized labels.

Example

Original:

Arthur Frost: Let's start the meeting.
Maria Johnson: Sounds good.

Anonymized:

Person 1: Let's start the meeting.
Person 2: Sounds good.

The same participant should always keep the same identifier throughout the transcript.

Suggested Settings

[ ] No anonymization (default)
[ ] Replace names with initials
[ ] Replace names with generic identifiers
[ ] Remember my preference

Benefits

  • Improved privacy when sharing transcripts.
  • Better support for GDPR, LGPD, and internal compliance requirements.
  • Easier publication of meeting summaries and documentation.
  • More suitable for AI-assisted processing and knowledge base creation.
  • Reduced need for manual editing before distribution.

Possible Future Enhancements

  • Custom anonymization templates.
  • Role-based identifiers (Moderator, Host, Speaker 1, Speaker 2, etc.).
  • Anonymization of email addresses and other personal identifiers.
  • Simultaneous export of both original and anonymized versions.
  • Selective anonymization per participant.

Additional Suggestion

A preview panel could allow users to verify the anonymization result before exporting:

Anonymization Mode: Generic Identifiers

Preview:
Person 1: Let's start the meeting.
Person 2: Sounds good.

This would help prevent mistakes and improve user confidence before sharing the resulting transcript.

Thank you for considering this enhancement.
