Fixes #4449.

Problem

For the same cached Claude call, the bedrock and anthropic packages emitted
different gen_ai.usage.input_tokens:

same usage in gen_ai.usage.input_tokens gen_ai.usage.total_tokens
anthropic _set_token_usage (__init__.py:234) 1012 1052
bedrock converse_usage_record (before) 12 52

…for inputTokens=12, cacheRead=1000, cacheWrite=0, outputTokens=40.

Adjudication: the fold is correct, and it is provider-neutral

Two independent sources settle the "per-model or per-package" question from
#4449:

OTel semconv — semantic-conventions-genai docs/gen-ai/aws-bedrock.md:

  • note 23: gen_ai.usage.cache_read.input_tokens — "The value SHOULD be
    included in gen_ai.usage.input_tokens."
  • note 24: gen_ai.usage.cache_write.input_tokens — same.
  • note 28: gen_ai.usage.input_tokens — "This value SHOULD include all
types of input tokens, including cached tokens."

These are notes on the Bedrock page itself, so the rule applies to any Bedrock
model that returns cache counts, not only Claude.

AWS — Bedrock User Guide, Prompt caching:

Important When prompt caching is enabled, the inputTokens field
represents only the non-cached input tokens (tokens that were not read from or
written to the cache). To calculate the total input tokens sent in a request,
use the following formula: total input tokens = inputTokens + cacheReadInputTokens + cacheWriteInputTokens

So the provider value and the semconv value are intentionally different
representations, and the instrumentation must fold on the way out. The repo's
own VCR cassettes corroborate it: test_prompt_cache.yaml has
input_tokens: 4 in the body and X-Amzn-Bedrock-Input-Token-Count: 4 in the
header, alongside cache_creation_input_tokens: 18131 — both raw fields exclude
the cache.

Change

Added _input_tokens_with_cache() in span_utils.py and applied it on every
path where cache counts are available:

  • converse_usage_record — Converse and ConverseStream (the metadata event
funnels through the same function), all model families.
  • _set_anthropic_messages_span_attributes — InvokeModel with the native
    Anthropic Messages body (usage.cache_read_input_tokens /
    usage.cache_creation_input_tokens), plus the header-only claude-v2 fallback.
  • _set_amazon_span_attributes — Nova stream. For InvokeModel the cache counts
are header-only, and these are the same x-amzn-bedrock-cache-*-input-token-count
headers prompt_caching_handling() already reads for the same span, so
input_tokens can no longer disagree with the cache attributes set next to it.

This goes slightly beyond the one-hunk converse_usage_record patch sketched in
the #4449 comment: leaving InvokeModel alone would have kept the split that
#4449 is about for the invoke_model + native-Anthropic-body path, which
returns the same Anthropic usage shape as the direct SDK.

gen_ai.usage.cache_read.input_tokens / gen_ai.usage.cache_write.input_tokens
still carry the raw subset counts, so the breakdown stays available.

Tests

tests/traces/test_cache_token_folding.py — 20 cases covering read-only,
write-only, both, explicit zeros, absent fields, missing inputTokens, the
header fallback, and the Titan branch that must stay untouched.

Existing cassettes are unaffected: the only non-zero-cache cassettes
(test_prompt_cache*, test_invoke_model_cache_tokens) are used by
test_prompt_caching.py and test_bedrock_prompt_caching_metrics.py, neither
of which asserts gen_ai.usage.input_tokens. All other converse cassettes carry
cacheReadInputTokens: 0 / cacheWriteInputTokens: 0, which fold to no change.

Not verified with a live call (no AWS credentials here), and not touched:

  • A real Converse response for a non-Anthropic model with caching (Nova). The AWS
wording is provider-neutral, but only the pure functions were exercised.
  • _set_anthropic_completion_span_attributes (the legacy claude-v1 prompt
body) — Claude v1 has no prompt caching.
  • The bedrock Responses API path (usage.input_tokens there already includes
    input_tokens_details.cached_tokens, so folding would double-count).

Unrelated to this fix, but found while reading the semconv: #4458 asks for the
reasoning-token subset on the Anthropic path, which is still missing.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Input token totals now include available prompt-cache read and write tokens across supported Bedrock responses, including Anthropic Messages, Amazon, and Converse usage. Cache counts are also reported separately where available, preserving visibility into cache usage alongside more complete input-token totals. Missing or invalid counts are handled safely, and missing input-token totals remain unavailable rather than being calculated from cache counts alone.

Bedrock reports its native input token count as the non-cached portion of the
prompt only. AWS documents the total as
`inputTokens + cacheReadInputTokens + cacheWriteInputTokens`, but the GenAI
semantic conventions require `gen_ai.usage.cache_read.input_tokens` and
`gen_ai.usage.cache_write.input_tokens` to be included in
`gen_ai.usage.input_tokens` (semantic-conventions-genai aws-bedrock.md notes
23/24, note 28).

The bedrock package emitted the raw non-cached count while the anthropic
package folded cache in, so the same cached Claude call reported
`gen_ai.usage.input_tokens` / `gen_ai.usage.total_tokens` differing by exactly
cache_read + cache_write depending on which package instrumented it (traceloop#4449).

Fold the cache counts on every path that has them available:
- `converse_usage_record` (Converse + ConverseStream, all models)
- `_set_anthropic_messages_span_attributes` (InvokeModel, native Anthropic
Messages body, plus the header-only fallback)
- `_set_amazon_span_attributes` (Nova stream; InvokeModel cache counts are
header-only, the same headers `prompt_caching_handling` reads)

The `gen_ai.usage.cache_{read,write}.input_tokens` subset attributes keep
reporting the raw cache counts.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-bedrock/tests/traces/test_cache_token_folding.py: Adds Converse usage tests expecting read and write cache counts to be folded into input and total tokens, while cache attributes retain their raw counts. Tests also cover either cache count alone, explicit zero or absent cache counts, and missing input tokens defaulting to zero.
  • observed — Modified behavior in packages/opentelemetry-instrumentation-bedrock/tests/traces/test_cache_token_folding.py: Adds Anthropic Messages tests for folding cache creation and read counts, and for unchanged input totals when cache fields are absent. Explanation

[#4449] The change resolves the reported Bedrock-versus-Anthropic token discrepancy. _input_tokens_with_cache() adds cache-read and cache-write counts to gen_ai.usage.input_tokens on the reported Bedrock paths. The change preserves raw cache subset attributes. The reported tests cover cache-count combinations, missing values, header fallback, and the unchanged Titan branch.

Keep Nova’s native usage count separate from cache subsets.

AWS defines Nova usage.inputTokens as the total tokens ingested by the model. The non-streaming usage branch adds the cache headers to that total, so a cached Nova InvokeModel response can overstate gen_ai.usage.input_tokens and gen_ai.usage.total_tokens.

Keep the folding for the Converse-style metadata.usage stream path.
