Demand: Internal Service Status Dashboard
Objective
Create an Internal Service Status Dashboard that continuously monitors and displays the actual health status of cloud platform services, regardless of whether they are in Maintenance Mode.
Business Need
The current public status dashboard suppresses service health visibility during Maintenance Mode. As a result:
- Actual service issues may go unnoticed during maintenance.
- Post-maintenance service degradation may not be detected immediately.
- Teams lack continuous visibility into service health and reliability.
Requirements
-
Monitor all cloud platform services continuously, including services in Maintenance Mode.
-
Display the actual health status of services regardless of maintenance state.
-
Clearly indicate when a service is in Maintenance Mode while still showing real health metrics.
-
Track key service health indicators, including:
- Availability
- Error rate
- Latency/response time
- Health status (Green/Yellow/Red)
-
Define and apply standard health thresholds across all services.
-
Allow service-owning teams to review service performance against these thresholds.
-
Generate alerts when service health breaches defined thresholds, including during Maintenance Mode.
-
Send alerts to designated Zulip channels instead of automatically creating Incident tickets.
-
Include service ownership information for accountability and follow-up actions.
-
Maintain historical health data and trends for analysis and reporting.
-
Provide visibility into service health before, during, and after maintenance activities.
Expected Benefits
- Continuous visibility of actual service health.
- Early detection of issues during maintenance windows.
- Faster identification of post-maintenance failures.
- Improved service reliability and quality ownership.
- Reduced incident ticket noise for maintenance-related events.
- Better operational awareness across engineering teams.
