When in zoom and full screen preview maybe the background should be black like in WhatsApp and Element X on iOS and menus should not be shown when you stop zooming #934

Description

@matlu

For the Full screen viewer in Element X and WhatsApp you tap on the image twice. First to open from the preview and a second time open the full screen viewer (WhatsApp) or tap once to get the full screen view (Robrix and Element X).

But once there both WhatsApp and ElementX hides the underlying conversation thread (background is black).
And you can focus on the image.
Robrix is showing a bit of the background all the time.
And also let the on-screen menu be seen when you zoom back (file name in the bottom and the image editing buttons on the top).
The other apps keeps those things consistently hidden until you tap on the image to bring them forward, so you don't get the distraction

As soon as you let go of the zooming (2 finger) under iOS in Robrix these items are shown. It doesn't wait for the user to tap before being shown.

Also note in the end as you go back from landscape to portrait the image fails to rotate back correctly

Finally note that in Element X you can use 2 finger zoom with the overlay of the file name on all time or tap once and hid the overlay while zooming

sorry, just looking at this now.

that's been fixed already in #942

Robrix is showing a bit of the background all the time.

yeah, that's a design choice. We could make it fully black, though imho it looks better to have a mostly opaque darkened overlay like we do now. I can certainly make that even darker & more opaque though.

For the Full screen viewer in Element X and WhatsApp you tap on the image twice. First to open from the preview and a second time open the full screen viewer (WhatsApp) or tap once to get the full screen view (Robrix and Element X).

huh, are you sure? for me, all apps open the full screen preview after just one tap on the image.

As soon as you let go of the zooming (2 finger) under iOS in Robrix these items are shown. It doesn't wait for the user to tap before being shown.

ok i see, so the expected behavior is to keep the overlay menu hidden after you release a pinch-to-zoom gesture? yeah, we can do that. Or rather, the behavior should be that pinch-to-zoom doesn't affect the visibility of the overlay menus --- if it's hidden when the pinch gesture starts, it says hidden after the gesture ends. If it's shown when the pinch gesture starts, it's still shown when the gesture ends. Is that correct?

Sorry for belated response. It is a bit of a timing issue. When you start using zoom and pan you are likely as a user to acticvely looking at the document.
In the image viewer for Element X (iOS) once you have done some pinch zooming you can pan, lift finger, put a single finger back on screen and continue to pan or continue to pinch zoom.
The overlay menu ONLY returns if you tap and release. E.g. touch and move around with a finger will never get the overlay to be seen.

Current Robrix behaviour is that if you put a finger back on screen and do some panning as soon as you lift the finger we bring the overlay menu back which is a bit annoying as it now covers what you panned to.

So just follow the Element X implementation would be great.

It is very easy to see this behaviour if you try on an iPhone/iPad and use both apps.

yes, of course, this makes sense.

    fixed.

Element X is using whatever platform's Swift/Kotlin widget for this, so they get it for free. We can't do that.

It is very easy to see this behaviour if you try on an iPhone/iPad and use both apps.

right, but that doesn't make it easy to implement.

anyway, i've finally finished implementing a branch new pinch-to-zoom implementation that fully replaces what we had before.
