feat(xtest): cross-SDK structural ZIP conformance tests (DSPX-4591 follow-up) - #624
DSPX-4591 found four web-sdk ZIP bugs, verified until now only by web-sdk's own unit tests. web-sdk#1017 fixed three of them:
backward byte-scanning for the central-directory signature instead of locating EOCD -> (ZIP64 locator ->) ZIP64 EOCD and walking exactly entryCount records;
the ZIP64 extra field gated on versionNeededToExtract >= 45 instead of on the 0xFFFFFFFF sentinel (APPNOTE 4.5.3);
a signed 32-bit shift corrupting an error message for sizes >= 2 GiB.
Bug 3 (a writer data-descriptor bug) was proposed separately in web-sdk#1086. test_zip64.py already covers size-boundary offset placement. This PR adds cross-SDK coverage of structural ZIP layout: spec-legal but unusual central-directory/EOCD shapes, and adversarial ones.
How it works
zipmutate.py rebuilds a real TDF's trailer (central directory, EOCD, ZIP64 EOCD and locator) from parsed values. It can set sentinels, reorder extra-field TLVs, add comments, overstate counts, or declare deliberately false sizes and offsets, without moving any local-header or payload byte. The rebuild re-encodes rather than copies, so any ZIP64 structure in a mutated container comes from the test. One producer is therefore enough: js encrypts, and every decrypt_sdk in the matrix decrypts.
test_zip_conformance.py holds every mutated container to one rule. Decrypt either exits 0 with byte-identical plaintext, or rejects cleanly: a normal nonzero exit, no crash marker, and a diagnostic on that SDK's ZIP-parser allowlist. Silent corruption, panics, signals, timeouts, and auth/network/usage failures fail the cell.
Each cell is labelled spec-legal or adversarial. The label doesn't change pass/fail. It decides which passing outcome gets warned about and recorded: rejecting a spec-legal structure (NonConformantZipReader), or accepting an adversarial one (LenientZipReader).
zipreport.py and the conftest.py hooks collect those records in-process. They print a zip conformance outcomes table at the end of the run, keyed by sdk@version, append it to the step summary, and write test-results/zip-conformance.json, which CI uploads.
A run whose conformance cells all skipped says so.
A passing cell that recorded nothing, or a malformed record, fails the run. Faults are listed in the step summary too, since the test counts stay green, and never replace a worse exit status (interrupted, internal error).
Every cell starts from the rebuilt but unmutated container, which each decryptor must first decrypt byte-for-byte as a control, once per decryptor. Without it, a reader that refused the rebuild itself would be reported as refusing whichever structure each cell mutates.
Java releases through v0.19.1 crash on 2**63 locator/directory offsets (java-sdk#398 adds the check; merged, not yet released). Those two cells skip for them via a new zip64-offset-bounds feature. XT_FORCE_SUPPORTS=zip64-offset-bounds forces them on.
all seven per-entry sentinel combinations under ZIP32 and ZIP64 EOCDs, after a foreign TLV, on every directory record (so a reader that steps past a ZIP64 extra by the wrong length misparses the next record);
a directory-entry comment;
65,535- and 65,536-byte directory records;
a max-length archive comment;
a ZIP64 locator pushed past the first KiB;
a fake CD record in the archive comment, declaring a 2**63 ZIP64 offset so a reader that scans backward for record signatures fails on it;
a ZIP64 extra field that is not first.
Adversarial:
truncated ZIP64 values;
oversized extra-field lengths;
stored sizes past EOF and at 2**63;
payload overlapping the CD;
local-header, locator and CD offsets past EOF and at 2**63;
an impossible entry count;
an overstated entry count.
Not covered cross-SDK: bug 2. Every ZIP64 record declares 4.5 as APPNOTE 4.4.3 requires, so a reader that gates on the version still passes. A 2.0 declaration is tested only against the Python inspector.
spec/zip-conformance-validation.md records the coverage, a 2026-09-24 comparison across Go/Java/JS revisions (measured under an earlier, stricter rule, and labelled as such), and reproduction steps.
Also in this PR
zipinspect.py: public signature/size constants, raw_crc32, local_file_header_data_offset(), and a widened EOCD search so the ZIP64 locator stays in view behind a 0xFFFF comment.
xtest.yml: test_zip_conformance.py joins the standard xtest step, and test-results/**/*.json is uploaded with the HTML reports.
check.yml: test_zip_conformance_units.py runs offline on every PR.
Testing
uv run ruff check ., uv run ruff format --check ., uv run pyright: clean.
uv run pytest test_zip_conformance_units.py test_zip64_units.py test_tdfs_units.py: all pass offline. This covers the builder against zipinspect/zipfile, the pass/fail contract including credential redaction and timeout cleanup, the rejection allowlists (positive and negative rows per SDK), report decoding, and the collection hooks.
The planted CD record was checked against the built web-sdk readers directly. Pre-#1017 ZipReader rejects the 2**63 plant (Value exceeds MAX_SAFE_INTEGER) and #1017 accepts it. With the earlier plant, whose offset was merely past EOF, pre-#1017 parsed it without failing and returned the plaintext, so the cell could not tell the buggy reader from the fixed one.
Cross-SDK cells run in the X-Test matrix; see the zip conformance outcomes table in each js job's step summary.
Worth a look in that table: js@main and js@v0.23.0 reject both spec-legal directory-record-length cells with local file header for [0.payload]: byte range [0, 65519) extends past the start of the central directory. 65519 = 30 + 9 + 65480, so js sizes its local-header read from the central directory's extra length, which APPNOTE lets differ from the local one. PR 1017 accepted both on 2026-09-24, so this looks like a regression from web-sdk#1079's bounds checks.

Changes: ZIP Conformance
Layer / File(s)
Summary
ZIP inspection and mutation xtest/zipinspect.py, xtest/zipmutate.py, xtest/test_zip_conformance_units.py
The inspector exposes ZIP record constants, raw CRC data, and local-header data offsets. The mutation utilities rebuild ZIP trailers while preserving bytes before the central directory. Unit tests check rewriting, ZIP64 fields, comments, and malformed metadata.
The tests exercise legal and malformed ZIP layouts across SDKs. Decryption must return byte-identical plaintext or a recognized clean rejection. Timeout, crash, and outcome checks are included. Capability detection gates selected ZIP64 offset cases.
Outcome reporting and CI integration xtest/zipreport.py, xtest/conftest.py, xtest/pyproject.toml, .github/workflows/*, spec/zip-conformance-validation.md, xtest/test_zip_conformance_units.py
Pytest collects and validates conformance records, then emits terminal and Markdown summaries and a JSON artifact. CI runs the offline and cross-SDK tests and uploads JSON results. The documentation describes coverage, recorded results, and reproduction steps.

## Summary
`main` fails the `scriptcheck` job's "Lint and test otdf-local" step
since #647 (run on 178baa1). ruff 0.17.0 reports:
- `TRY004` at `otdf_local/utils/keys.py:233` and `:241`: two
`isinstance` checks in `_read_extra_keys` raise `ValueError`.
- `I001` at `tests/test_golden_keys.py:8`: the first-party import group
isn't separated from `pytest`.
While these are assertions of values, since they are on data from JSON
objects, ValueError is more correct.
## Changes
- Keep `ValueError` for those two checks and add `# noqa: TRY004`. The
function's docstring promises a `ValueError` naming the file for every
problem with `extra-keys.json`, and `PlatformService._preflight` catches
`ValueError` to report it as a start error. Switching to `TypeError` to
satisfy the rule would break that.
- `ruff check --fix` on the test's imports.
## Testing
Run locally in `otdf-local/`:
- `uv run ruff check .` and `uv run ruff format --check .`: clean.
- `uv run pyright`: 0 errors.
- `uv run pytest`: 109 passed.
The same commit is also on #624, which hit this failure after rebasing
onto `main`.

test_zip64.py covers size-boundary offset placement (the [2**31, 2**32)
signed-read window). It has no coverage of the structural/adversarial ZIP
layout bug class fixed in web-sdk PR #1017 (DSPX-4591): backward
byte-scanning for the central-directory signature, the ZIP64 extra field
gated on versionNeededToExtract instead of the sentinel, and related
malformed-layout handling -- all previously validated only by web-sdk's own
unit tests, never cross-SDK.
Adds zipmutate.py, a write-only ZIP trailer builder that rewrites a real
TDF's central directory/EOCD in place (sentinel a field, reorder extra-field
TLVs, inflate the entry count, pad the comment) without moving any local
header or payload byte. test_zip_conformance.py uses it for five cross-SDK
tests covering ZIP64 extra-field order/version independence, max-length EOCD
comments, a non-size-mandated ZIP64 EOCD behind an oversized comment,
overstated entry counts, and a fake central-directory signature planted in
payload bytes. Only web-sdk (js) is used as the producer, since it always
writes ZIP64 regardless of size -- no multi-GiB payload is needed.
test_zip_conformance_units.py covers zipmutate.py itself offline, against
zipinspect.py as the oracle.
zipinspect.py gains local_file_header_data_offset(), de-privatized
signature/size constants for reuse, and a raw_crc32 field on
CentralDirectoryEntry -- needed so rewritten trailers carry the real CRC-32
and don't fail decrypt on readers that validate it.
New zip_conformance_pt_file/zip_conformance_tdf fixtures mirror the existing
chunky_pt_file/chunky_tdf pattern. New zip_conformance pytest marker is
organizational only (unlike zip64, it is not size-gated), so these tests run
by default in CI.
CI: wires test_zip_conformance.py into xtest.yml's PR-gated xct job
(alongside test_tdfs.py/test_policytypes.py -- it's fast and skips
immediately for non-js encrypt_sdk, so it only does real work on the js@*
matrix rows) and test_zip_conformance_units.py into check.yml's offline
harness step, in the same slot as its sibling test_zip64_units.py.

Include the ZIP64 locator in the maximum-comment inspection window.
Move the fake directory record into the ZIP comment and require a faithful
round trip so parser failures cannot pass as authentication failures.
Keep ordinary entries at extraction version 2.0 and declare 4.5 only for
ZIP64 scenarios. Retain low-version compatibility coverage for the oracle.
Add offline regressions for locator boundaries and the conformance verdict.
Validation: 61 ZIP tests passed; ruff check, ruff format, and pyright passed.

Every zipmutate-produced container in test_zip_conformance.py was held to
one of two absolute standards: spec-legal structures had to round-trip,
malformed ones had to be refused. Real readers don't split that cleanly --
declining a 0xFFFF EOCD comment loses nobody any data, and neither does
ignoring a bogus ZIP64 offset, reading the honest records around it, and
returning the correct plaintext. Both failed the cell, so the matrix went
red for conformance strictness rather than for data loss.
Collapse both into one rule: decrypt either exits 0 with byte-identical
plaintext, or rejects the container cleanly. Silent corruption, a panic or
signal death, a timeout, and failures about something other than the
container all still fail. A green matrix must still say which readers are
conformant and which are merely safe, so each tolerated outcome emits a
ZipConformanceWarning (NonConformantZipReader / LenientZipReader) and a
record_property. Only the allowlist-matched substring is warned or
recorded -- the go and java cli.sh shims echo command lines containing
client credentials, and a unit test pins that invariant.
The unmutated readable_zip_base control keeps its strict round-trip
assertion. test_malformed_zip_is_rejected becomes
test_malformed_zip_never_yields_wrong_plaintext, since after this change
nothing in the module asserts a malformed archive is actually refused.
_ZIP_REJECTIONS is unchanged: a live go/java/js matrix confirmed every
newly-tolerated cell already matches an existing pattern. Three real
diagnostics stay deliberately unlisted, each an SDK noticing by accident
downstream of its ZIP layer rather than diagnosing the container -- java's
message-less IllegalArgumentException from a 1<<63 seek, js's "Unexpected
end of JSON input", and go's "invalid character 'P' after top-level
value". All three are pinned as negative rows and filed upstream.
junit_family = xunit1 because record_property drops <properties> under
xunit2; the workflow gains --junitxml, a widened artifact glob, and a step
that prints the per-SDK lenient/conformant table.
Live matrix (go java js, all checked-out builds): 594 cells recorded, zero
silent corruption. Those exit-0 malformed cells had never had their
plaintext compared before -- they failed at `assert 0 < status` first.

APPNOTE 4.4.10-12 sizes each of the three length fields as its own
uint16; only their sum crosses the 65535 the note recommends, and that
is a SHOULD with no field behind it. The record stays internally
consistent -- the declared lengths are truthful and the next record
begins exactly where they say -- so there is one possible parse and
accepting it is the conformant answer.
Classifying it adversarial warned about correct behavior: go@main,
java and js#1017 all parse it by widening before adding, and refusing
it would cost interop with the timestamp, Unix UID/GID, ACL and
signing TLVs that routinely push third-party records past the limit.
A reader that adds in uint16 still cannot pass quietly -- the cursor
wraps into a hard failure, a rejection or the decrypt timeout.
go@v0.37.0 rejects only over_limit ('zip: file not found'), which is
that wrap caught to the byte.
Record the accepting/rejecting rule in the module docstring so the
next cell can be classified without rederiving it.
Reading the per-cell conformance outcomes back out of the junit XML cost
a non-default `junit_family = xunit1`: per-testcase <properties> are not
in the xunit2 schema, and pytest warns at any cell that records one. The
setting bought a channel that existed only in CI -- the same run locally
printed nothing -- and the step that parsed it was sixty lines of
heredoc that no test covered.
Collect the records in a pytest_runtest_logreport hook instead. They
already cross the xdist boundary intact on the report, so the controller
holds every cell by sessionfinish: write test-results/zip-conformance.json,
append the table to $GITHUB_STEP_SUMMARY, and print it through the
terminal reporter, which is the half a local run never got.
zipreport.py carries the parsing and rendering so both are exercised
offline in check.yml rather than only by a full cross-SDK nightly. One
JSON property per judged container replaces four separately named ones:
a cell that judges two containers now reports both, where a reader
keying by property name kept only the last and said nothing.
zip_outcome appends to item.user_properties directly rather than through
record_property. They are the same list -- the fixture is that append
plus the xunit2 warning, and that warning's advice is to restore the
setting this commit removes.
java-sdk#418 reports a container or manifest it cannot read as the public
SDK.MalformedTDFException. Accept it by name in the java allowlist, keeping
the bare causes for releases before it, and pin a non-malformed SDKException
as a negative row.

- Plant a 2**63 ZIP64 offset in the fake CD record. With an offset merely
past EOF, pre-#1017 web-sdk parsed the plant without failing and returned
the plaintext, so the cell credited the reader it was written for as
conformant.
- Route every cell through readable_zip_base, so a reader that refuses the
rebuild itself is not reported as refusing each spec-legal structure, and
prove each baseline once per decryptor rather than once per cell.
- Put the per-entry ZIP64 sentinels on every directory record, so a reader
that steps past a ZIP64 extra by the wrong length has a record to misparse.
- Write harness faults to the step summary, and never replace an
interrupted or internal-error exit status with TESTS_FAILED.
- Fix the inverted zip64-offset-bounds docstring, say why java's
MalformedTDFException is accepted whatever its cause, mark the pinned
downstream accidents as fixed upstream, and scope the spec's 2026-09-24
claims to that run.

Summary
DSPX-4591 found four web-sdk ZIP bugs, verified until now only by web-sdk's own unit tests. web-sdk#1017 fixed three of them:
entryCountrecords;versionNeededToExtract >= 45instead of on the0xFFFFFFFFsentinel (APPNOTE 4.5.3);Bug 3 (a writer data-descriptor bug) was proposed separately in web-sdk#1086.
test_zip64.pyalready covers size-boundary offset placement. This PR adds cross-SDK coverage of structural ZIP layout: spec-legal but unusual central-directory/EOCD shapes, and adversarial ones.How it works
zipmutate.pyrebuilds a real TDF's trailer (central directory, EOCD, ZIP64 EOCD and locator) from parsed values. It can set sentinels, reorder extra-field TLVs, add comments, overstate counts, or declare deliberately false sizes and offsets, without moving any local-header or payload byte. The rebuild re-encodes rather than copies, so any ZIP64 structure in a mutated container comes from the test. One producer is therefore enough:jsencrypts, and everydecrypt_sdkin the matrix decrypts.test_zip_conformance.pyholds every mutated container to one rule. Decrypt either exits 0 with byte-identical plaintext, or rejects cleanly: a normal nonzero exit, no crash marker, and a diagnostic on that SDK's ZIP-parser allowlist. Silent corruption, panics, signals, timeouts, and auth/network/usage failures fail the cell.NonConformantZipReader), or accepting an adversarial one (LenientZipReader).zipreport.pyand theconftest.pyhooks collect those records in-process.
