feat(app): support pre-registered OAuth clients for HTTP MCP servers - #214
Conversation
…plus settings polish HTTP MCP servers could not authorize against endpoints without dynamic client registration (Google's hosted MCP endpoints die at registerClient with 'Incompatible auth server: does not support dynamic client registration'). An HTTP MCP server can now name an optional pre-registered OAuth client: client ID, client-secret env var (names only, values stay in the environment), and scopes. SidecarOAuthProvider serves the configured client so the MCP SDK skips registration, adds the scopes to the authorization request, and exchanges the code with the secret; token storage and the DCR flow are unchanged for servers without the setting. MCP registry cards keep their tool lists collapsed by default and the Add/Edit panel stays anchored at the section top; the right registry column drops card-in-card and Tag noise; 'Reconnect / Test' is now a single 'Reconnect' that reconnects only that server over the running sidecar (new mcp:test-server protocol message and McpRegistry.testServer) instead of restarting the sidecar and resetting every connection. The Add/Edit panel reserves its scrollbar gutter so text is never hidden behind it. Also applies the settings-wide audit fixes: shared disclosure idiom, theme tokens for success/warning states, visible load/copy failures in run history, radix select in Shortcuts, honest copy trims in Agent and Audio, and update-check failure feedback in About. Tests: oauth-provider, mcp-server-config, mcp-registry, main IPC, and McpSettings updated with targeted coverage; bun test green, typecheck and lint clean. Model: opencode-go/glm-5.3-flash; harness: OpenCode (T3 Code).

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to Pre-registered OAuth client secrets could be sent across redirects or over plaintext token endpoints. MCP servers cannot be tested before Agent Mode is enabled. The new update-check error alert does not appear for real failures. These issues should be resolved before merge. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to Pre-registered OAuth support lets a configured server use a secret held in an environment variable. That raises the stakes of how the authorization server and redirects are trusted. Redirects are blocked by default and secrets are excluded from token files, but the available evidence does not establish all checks before a remote endpoint receives the secret. Retained concerns

Refresh failure hides saved history
A failed live refresh sets this flag without clearing the runs already loaded, but the error replaces the entire list. A temporary failure therefore hides usable history until another refresh succeeds. The detail timeline similarly hides previously loaded events after a failed refresh.

It looks like you’re investigating OAuth behavior in `@ai-sdk/mcp` 2.0.10. The search results point to `oauth.ts`’s refresh path: it POSTs form-encoded parameters and uses the injected `fetchFn` (or global `fetch`). A reported issue showed a successful refresh returning form-encoded text where the code expected JSON, causing parsing to fail and auth to fall back to a redirect. That issue concerned `0.0.8`, so it doesn’t confirm 2.0.10 has the same bug. [1]
For `client_secret_post`, client credentials should be included in the form body—not sent as Basic auth. I couldn’t verify the exact 2.0.10 source from the available results. [2]

When that value is follow, credential-bearing token requests can follow preserving redirects to another host. For **`@ai-sdk/mcp@2.0.10`**, the OAuth implementation is in `src/tool/oauth.ts`. It refreshes tokens by POSTing form-encoded data to the discovered token endpoint with `grant_type=refresh_token` and the stored refresh token. Client authentication is added according to the configured or selected token-endpoint auth method; for `client_secret_post`, the secret goes in the form body, while `client_secret_basic` uses the `Authorization` header. Problem
HTTP MCP servers that require pre-registered OAuth clients could not complete sign-in, and reconnecting one server restarted every MCP connection. The MCP settings editor also lost incomplete OAuth fields while typing.
Fix
This changes persisted HTTP MCP metadata, sidecar token storage, and the Electron-to-sidecar MCP test message. It does not add a new provider or dependency.
