… produced (#24191) Split out of #24162. This PR is the shared groundwork that #24192 and #24193 build on. It also sets `max_page_fragment_size` and raises `max_page_size_bytes` to ensure benchmark `parquet_read_file_shape` can actually generate requested Parquet shape. Authors: - Qi Chen (https://github.com/qbacpey) Approvers: - Vukasin Milovanovic (https://github.com/vuule) - Kyle Edwards (https://github.com/KyleFromNVIDIA) URL: #24191
Moves the file-local write_file_data out of parquet_reader_metadata.cpp into write_mixed_dtype_parquet_file so the hybrid scan benchmarks can write the same input. mixed_dtypes becomes a function returning a reference now that it is used from more than one translation unit.
hybrid_scan_setup_phase runs the whole setup path in every cell and times the window named by the phase axis, with an ALL cell for pairing against the naive reader. hybrid_scan_file_shape measures how the page index fetch and setup phases scale with row group and page counts.

This update introduces additional element count metrics for column chunks in the Parquet reader benchmarks, specifically in the `BM_parquet_read_footer`, `BM_parquet_reader_construction`, and `BM_parquet_column_selection` functions. The `BM_hybrid_scan_setup_phase` benchmark also receives a similar enhancement. The previous per-second metrics have been removed to streamline the reporting. Additionally, the hybrid scan file shape benchmark has been modified to support multiple data types, improving its flexibility and accuracy in performance measurements.

This just duplicates the existing parquet_read_footer benchmark. The read_parquet_footers API already runs all the footer and page index setup functions. Please drop this

FOOTER_FETCH and PAGE_INDEX_FETCH are a datasource::host_read on a cold file, so they measure disk I/O, not anything else. Posted numbers also show this: up to 38% noise, and with page_index=1 the footer fetch is faster than with page_index=0 at 64 cols.

Removed this benchmark, only left BM_hybrid_scan_file_shape to focus on PageIndex setup

160 cells / ~23 min is too much. Data shows setup cost is the same for every dtype so no need to remeasure it again. Also we don't really need to measure data fetch cost here which scales with min/max byte width. These benchmarks need to run in CI as well so 10M, 100M rows cases will definitely OOM or time out. Instead of setting rows explicitly, I would recommend varying total table sizes and providing that to table profile. As page-index parse (not fetch) cost at high page counts is worth tracking, use max_page_fragment_size() writer parameter to write small enough pages with one or two dtypes (e.g. INT32, STRING). Drop PAGE_INDEX_FETCH.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Done, now covers only INT32 and STRING. Now it would take 102s in full run, in CI mode (--profile) it takes 5.8 s
It looks like the page size does not affect the page-index parsing cost, while the page count does

Do we really need to benchmark page index fetch. That's just an IO benchmark, isn't it?

Better future proof idea could be to take in the vector of types here and revert the name of the function to make it more generic?

If the "vector of types" idea is preferred over the original impl, I can apply it instead

The cartesian product of all axes and types is really really huge and impractical. Needs to be cut down significantly to only have a meaningful set of coverage

This commit simplifies the configuration of the Parquet reader metadata benchmark by removing unnecessary parameters in the `ConfigureNVBench` function. Additionally, it enhances the `parquet_common.cpp` file by refactoring the `write_file_shape_parquet_file` function to accept a `table_view` instead of individual parameters, improving clarity and usability. The mixed data types handling has been streamlined, and redundant code has been removed to enhance maintainability.

This commit updates the `write_file_shape_parquet_file` function in `parquet_common.cpp` to enhance its clarity by directly using the `table` parameter instead of a sliced view. It also modifies the function documentation to reflect that the layout is exact only when the number of rows is a multiple of `num_row_groups * pages_per_row_group`. Additionally, unnecessary code related to leftover rows has been removed, streamlining the implementation. The changes improve the overall maintainability and usability of the Parquet writing functionality.

Page locations are decoded in parallel from 512 pages per chunk. One row group of 1'000 pages and ten of 100 give the same page count split differently, as do one of 10'000 and ten of 1'000
This commit modifies the `BM_hybrid_scan_file_shape` benchmark in `hybrid_scan_metadata.cpp` to include additional data sizes in the configuration. The `data_size` axis now supports 32MB, 128MB, and 512MB, enhancing the benchmark's flexibility for performance measurements across varying data sizes.
