Warning

Breaking Rust source APIs and downstream error representation changes.

  • The Rust worker SDK adds WorkerSdkError::Downstream { source, continuation_id }. Update exhaustive matches; inspect source for the original Callback or Transport error. Propagate the complete error to preserve provenance.
  • Python downstream errors can use a private WorkerSdkError subclass. Ordinary except WorkerSdkError and isinstance checks remain valid; exact-type checks must allow subclasses. Re-raise the original exception to preserve provenance.

Native ABI layouts and existing execution RPC signatures remain unchanged. Protobuf additions are wire compatible; snapshot JSON adds optional remote, with snapshot and catalogue versions remaining 1. Error display text and legacy reports are preserved. Older SDKs may discard provenance and retain the previous callback-failure attribution.

Overview

Implement Phase 5 dynamic-plugin diagnostics using the runtime owner's existing bounded diagnostics context. Stacked on #1449 (Phase 2); base branch: feat/diagnostics-phase-two. Phase 1 is #1448.

  • I confirm this contribution is my own work, or I have the right to submit it under this project's license.
  • I searched existing issues and open pull requests, and this does not duplicate existing work.

Details

  • Host-observed plugin operations: startup configuration resolution records policy, artifact-verification, and schema failures when supplied the owner context. Native integration records load, validation, and registration successes/failures, plus callback failures. Worker integration additionally covers launch, handshake, transport, cancellation-RPC failures, shutdown, exit, and process cleanup. Structured causes determine classification; combined read/validation errors remain Unknown where the source cannot distinguish them. These are operation observations, with no new health or recovery policy. Completion, backpressure, and caller cancellation keep their existing execution semantics. Standalone validation remains report-only.
  • Remote provenance and shared-core reuse: add RemoteDiagnosticOrigin and plugin-operation catalogue entries. Worker events retain distinct activation/session identities, submission sequence, optional producer wall time, and authoritative host receipt timing. Existing core counters, windows, history, and memory budgets remain the recording authority. Failed unpublished registrations release their reservations through a core rollback path.
  • Authenticated diagnostic service: add RelayDiagnostics alongside the existing services on the worker host transport. Acceptance and the latest retry receipt are committed together in memory under the session lock. Identical retries replay that receipt without recounting; sequence gaps, conflicts, and expired replay requests are rejected. Session, component, extension, metadata, and frame limits bound ingestion; diagnostic transport permits are acquired before protobuf decoding and held through response delivery. Execution/log RPC limits are unchanged.
  • Host-owned delivery policy: core supplies request/response limits, pending capacity, retry attempts, and per-attempt timeouts through DiagnosticCapabilities. Both SDKs validate supported contracts and safety limits, require capabilities to match when opening the session, and apply the supplied policy unchanged for that session. There is no negotiation or counteroffer. Current policy is 16 KiB requests, 128 KiB responses, 32 pending submissions plus one in flight, three attempts including the first, and a two-second per-attempt timeout. Core retention, SDK delivery queues, host session capacity, and transport concurrency have separate limits; this PR adds no user-facing policy configuration knobs.
  • Rust/Python worker facades: initialize lazily through the existing runtime helper and expose component registration, lazy observation authoring, delivery statistics, flush, and close. Authors can register common plugin failure codes or bounded extensions; host lifecycle/callback codes are reserved for host observations. Pending submissions retain frozen bytes. A named 256-byte envelope allowance reserves space for credentials, session/sequence fields, and protobuf framing; delivery also checks the complete encoded request against the host limit. Local bootstrap safeguards and shutdown drain bounds remain separate. Disabled, unsupported, or unavailable diagnostics produce inert facades; delivery failures leave plugin execution independent. Unrecoverable acceptance uncertainty stops further submissions for that session; SDK-local dropped/rejected/uncertain totals are not replayed as host observations.
  • Error provenance: preserve downstream continuation identity in unary errors, streamed errors, and initial stream-opening status metadata. For forwarded downstream errors, the host suppresses callback/transport-failure attribution only when the identity matches the current invocation; absent or foreign identity retains the existing attribution behavior.
  • Privacy and lifecycle: plugin diagnostic observations use state-only recording, keeping restricted evidence separate from operational logs, marks, subscribers, and exporters. Closing/revoking worker-authored components retains bounded host evidence and leaves the owner context alive. Legacy config/runtime reports and readers keep their existing behavior.
  • CLI discovery: advertise supported native/worker producer families independently of collection enablement or successful registration. Snapshots identify the actual registered instances; dynamic-plugin integration is removed from the deferred-family list.

Boundaries: native diagnostics are host observations; this PR adds no native ABI entry point for plugin-authored diagnostic submissions. Canonical worker snapshot reads remain denied (can_read_context = false); workers receive no whole-context inspection grant. One diagnostic session is admitted per activation, and a closed session cannot reopen without a new activation. Retry receipts and retained evidence are in memory, with only the latest receipt replayable. OTel pipeline, daemon/broker, and runtime language-binding integrations remain in their respective phases; the Rust/Python changes here are to the worker plugin SDKs.

Documentation: Fern .mdx changes are in standalone #1458, targeting main. This PR has no docs/ or fern/ diff; package READMEs and source API comments stay with the implementation.

Regression coverage included:

  • Host authentication, replay/counting, provenance, rejection semantics, admission rollback, evidence retention, and transport limits/deadlines; a real worker records deltas of two and three into the selected host context and retains evidence after cleanup.
  • Native callback settlement and malformed streams; worker stream-opening/body provenance, timeout and activation cleanup; disabled/exhausted collection and replacement-instance attribution; configuration report precedence and required/optional failure evidence.
  • Rust/Python SDK application of non-default host policies, rejection of unsupported/invalid or changed session capabilities, inert disabled/unsupported behavior, frozen queues, complete-frame size admission, receipt handling, terminal-session fencing, and shutdown behavior.

Validation at c3d13125 (current head):

  • Recorded local validation: Python plugin SDK suite 420 passed; Ruff, Python type checks, Rust formatting, whitespace checks, and the enabled staged repository hooks passed. Rust build hooks and unrelated documentation link checks were skipped in that local run.
  • CI check job: cargo check and formatting passed, but Clippy failed on four test functions exceeding the cognitive-complexity limit in plugin_dynamic_configuration_tests.rs and dynamic_diagnostics_tests.rs.
  • Linux ARM64 Rust CI: 6,340 passed, one failed, four skipped. native_async_rejection_observations_exclude_duplicate_and_cancelled_settlement fails its upstream-error assertion. The other Rust platform jobs were cancelled; they do not establish passing results for this head.
  • The earlier Windows cancellation-test timing issue was changed to an explicit fake-server gRPC failure in this head; the cancelled Windows job has not confirmed that fix on Windows.
  • Local Rust tests and Clippy have not been rerun after clearing the disk-space blocker. Rust validation is not green. No implementation tests were run for this description-only update.

Where should the reviewer start?

Start with host acceptance and session ownership and transport admission. Then review producer classification, the Rust facade, delivery loop, and Python facade.

The real-process contract is covered by worker_sdk_records_into_selected_host_context_and_survives_plugin_cleanup in worker integration tests. Public protocol documentation is proposed separately in #1458.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Dynamic plugins can report diagnostic successes and failures, with remote observations retaining source and timing information.
    • Rust and Python worker SDKs provide APIs for registering diagnostic components, recording observations, checking delivery statistics, and flushing or closing diagnostics.
    • Diagnostics discovery reports supported capabilities and coverage, including before plugin registration.
    • Diagnostic delivery uses bounded queues and retries, with statistics for dropped, rejected, and uncertain submissions.
    • Continuation errors preserve their origin so downstream failures are not misattributed to plugin callbacks.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on propagating continuation errors in the worker SDKs.

Native and worker plugin paths report lifecycle and callback outcomes. Continuation IDs propagate through worker error conversions so matching downstream failures can be distinguished from local callback failures.
Producer discovery and capability reporting
crates/cli/src/diagnostics_http.rs, crates/cli/src/runtime_diagnostics.rs, crates/cli/tests/coverage/shared/diagnostics_http_tests.rs
CLI discovery lists the CLI and plugin producer families and reports otel, daemon, and bindings as deferred sources.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The phase-five rows in the "Plugin Producer Boundaries" table are now stale.

Line 372 says native ABI has "no canonical mechanism-specific adapter". Line 373 says worker launch, handshake, RPC, remote observations, and protocol transport have "no canonical worker integration".

This PR adds both. The new "Dynamic Plugin Diagnostics" section (Lines 34-69) describes them. The table now contradicts that section.

Lines 411-414 are also stale. They still list native-status, dynamic trust/policy, and worker classifiers as future work.

Update these rows and paragraphs to describe the integrated coverage.

As per path instructions, "Review documentation for technical accuracy against the current API... Flag stale examples."

crates/core/tests/unit/worker_diagnostic_transport_tests.rs: 1

56-58: The exact permit assertions depend on the shared static semaphore.

These assertions read REQUESTS, which is process-global. worker_diagnostics_tests.rs also uses BoundedService and can hold a permit at the same time. In that case available_permits() returns 14 instead of 15, and the test fails intermittently. The fix belongs in worker_diagnostic_transport.rs: make the semaphores per instance, then assert on the instance's semaphore.

🟡 Minor · Record body completion or failure on the unmanaged streaming passthrough. · mod.rs:1754-1770

crates/cli/src/gateway/mod.rs:1754-1770
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Record body completion or failure on the unmanaged streaming passthrough.

forward_upstream_request now records CliUpstreamHeadersReceived for every upstream call, including the call from passthrough_streaming. The byte stream in passthrough_streaming records nothing afterwards:

  • A chunk error calls operational::upstream_stream_read_failed but does not call diag::failure(Operation::Upstream, CliFailureCode::UpstreamResponse, ...).
  • Normal completion calls guard.complete() but does not record SuccessCode::CliUpstreamBodyCompleted.

The managed SSE path and diagnostic_response_body record both stages. On this route, the cli.upstream component therefore shows headers with no body outcome. That contradicts the documented separation between header receipt and body completion.

Proposed fix
         while let Some(chunk) = bytes.next().await {
             if chunk.is_err() {
+                diag::failure(
+                    Operation::Upstream,
+                    CliFailureCode::UpstreamResponse,
+                    FailureClass::Unknown,
+                );
                 if let Some(operational) = guard.context.as_ref() {
                     operational::upstream_stream_read_failed(operational);
                 }
                 guard.stop();
                 yield chunk;
                 return;
             }
             yield chunk;
         }
+        diag::success(Operation::Upstream, SuccessCode::CliUpstreamBodyCompleted);
         guard.complete();

182-192: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The fingerprint mismatch concern is refuted. bootstrap_tls_tunnel does not compare the presented fingerprint with state.bootstrap_fingerprint. It computes the proof from the presented fingerprint, and diagnostics-read/v1 is accepted as the inspection fingerprint. A configured gateway fingerprint therefore does not cause this request to fail.

Review comments at @docs/build-plugins/workers/grpc-v1-protocol.mdx:
- Around line 51-52: Clarify the gRPC v1 protocol sequence rules by
distinguishing transport capacity rejections from recording-level refusals:
capacity rejections and malformed requests do not consume a sequence, while
structurally valid submissions the host refuses to record consume a sequence and
receive a terminal Rejected receipt.

Review comments at @docs/reference/diagnostics.mdx:
- Around line 516-521: Move the capability response paragraph out of the routes
table in the diagnostics reference so it does not interrupt the Markdown table.
Keep the `/_nemo_relay/v1/diagnostics`, `/components`, and `/events` rows
contiguous, then place the paragraph after the final table row.

Repo: NVIDIA/NeMo-Relay PR: 1450
File: crates/types/src/diagnostics/catalogue.rs:302-386
Timestamp: 2026-10-22T00:45:35.801Z
Learning: In NVIDIA/NeMo-Relay, additive diagnostic catalogue names do not increment DIAGNOSTIC_CATALOGUE_VERSION because unknown names retain opaque compatibility. Incompatible changes to catalogue meaning or representation require a revision increment.

134-149: The earlier capacity-rejection comment is already covered by the current code.

The previous comment asked deliver to stop fencing delivery after a capacity rejection that the host marks as not consumed. Line 136 through Line 140 now treat RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED that carries DIAGNOSTIC_NOT_CONSUMED_METADATA as NotConsumed. The sequence is kept, and delivery stays open. That matches the earlier fix request.

Narrow Python delivery policies before use, make test overrides explicit, and apply formatting. Remove redundant capability clones, express inclusive bounds directly, and scope the Rust test lock before awaiting.

Signed-off-by: Bryan Bednarski <bbednarski@nvidia.com>
Add focused Rust and Python regressions for SDK policy validation, delivery shutdown, receipts, host admission and retention, transport deadlines, native callbacks, producer classification, and worker lifecycle diagnostics.

Signed-off-by: Bryan Bednarski <bbednarski@nvidia.com>
Cover native validation and callback settlement, worker stream provenance and activation cleanup, SDK frame admission and terminal session fencing, unavailable collection and replacement attribution, and configuration failure evidence and precedence.

Python plugin SDK: 420 tests passed. Staged checks passed with Rust build hooks and unrelated documentation link checks skipped. Rust compilation and execution remain pending disk-space approval.
