[Feature Request] Improve integration with building mods (e.g. Building Gadgets 2, Construction Sticks) #42

Open

Description

@quaeryth

First saw this with the building gadget from Building Gadgets 2 and wrote up an issue on that repo. Since then, I've noticed that similar behavior happens with the Construction Sticks mod, as well, so I suspect that the root of it lies with Pocket Storage. I'm including my writeup from the BG2 issue below, for reference. Construction Sticks is slightly different in that no block outline is rendered at all, and I would imagine that this is the case for other mods doing the same sort of thing, as well.

Building Gadgets 2 Version: 1.3.9
Pocket Storage Version: 1.2.5

Describe the issue
When using the building gadget to place blocks stored only in a Pocket Storage Unit (e.g. tier 2) in the player's inventory, the block rendering will appear red. Using the gadget will actually place the blocks, however.

To Reproduce

  1. Obtain a building gadget and a pocket storage unit.
  2. Store a block in the pocket storage unit and nowhere else in the player inventory.
  3. Use the building gadget to indicate where the blocks should be placed, and observe the red/item unavailable rendering effect.
  4. Activate the building gadget (right click) to place the blocks.

Expected behavior
The block rendering effect should be normal, to show that the building gadget has enough blocks to complete the operation.

    Havnt quite worked out a way of fixing this yet, its always been a problem, its because building gadgets calculates the inventory on the client side, and the client side doesnt know whats inside the pocket storage.

    Ah, okay. That makes sense, then. I also just noticed/verified that Sophisticated Backpacks allow the blocks to render correctly. Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but would that mean something like the backpack is storing the data of its contents client side? I checked the BG2 repo, and it looks like the only integrations specifically addressed there are Applied Energistics 2 and Curios, so I'd assume that Sophisticated Backpacks is handling things differently (i.e. client- versus server-side).

    If so, and ignoring for the moment the amount of time it would take to make such a change, is there any reason the same couldn't be done with Pocket Storage?
