What is the nameserver for?

Is it used for all requests, only for proxied requests, only for non-proxied requests, or called prior to determining proxy/direct? Is the nameserver itself proxied?

If it is only used for non-proxied request, can I just use the system one? I tried to omit the nameserver option, but got an error instead.
